                         Every Secret Thing
                         by Laura Lippman
Another discovery that I found on my very old Advanced Reader Copy shelves and since I'm hooked on her writing now, I was very pleased to see and read it. She's so good at bringing so many characters to life in one book, since I'm basically a nosy person, that makes a great reading experience for me. Alice Manning and Ronnie Fuller begin the book as 11 year olds who on one terrible afternoon alter their futures by one awful mistake that will have long term concequences for so many people. When a friends mom sends them home from a birthday party they lie and say they can walk to Ronnie's Aunts house which isn't far away. On their walk they spot a baby on a porch in a carriage, abandoned they think. In impulse they take the baby, thinking childishly they could take care of her better than whoever left her outside. Fast forward to when they turn 18 and are released from prison for the death of the infant. Soon after they're released a few children are taken, some barely gone for minutes, until one day a girl is taken and not returned. The police soon focus on the two women, sending Ronnie's orderly life into disarray, while Alice takes the police visits with an odd calmness. The book was sad and surprising, I liked it.
